El Condicional

Hola estimados estudiantes de español en Liverpool o de  cualquiera otra parte del mundo,

Hoy vamos a ver el tiempo condicional en español.  

¿Qué es el condicional?

The conditional is a verb form used to talk about things that would happen or that would  be true under certain conditions. Here we have some examples in English:

I would go if I were free. 

Also it is used to talk to say what you would like or need (in a polite form). For example.

I would like to study Spanish.   

Could I have some assistance please?-

I would buy a plane if I had money.

As you see in English you can spot the conditional by the word would.

However in Spanish it is different. To form the conditional of any regular verb you just have to add the following endings to the infinitive of the verb:

-ía, -ías, -ía, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían.

And… the great new is that the endings are the same for all the conjugations (verbs ending in –ar ,-er,-ir).

Here you have some examples:

                        Hablar          Comer                            vivir

Yo                hablaría             comería                         viviría

Tú                 hablarías          comerías                        vivirías

Él/ella           hablaría            comería                          viviría

Nosotros/as  hablaríamos     comeríamos                  viviríamos

Vosotros/as  hablaríais          comeríais                       viviríais

Ellos/as        hablarían           comerían                       vivirían

Now let’s  see when we use the conditional in Spanish.

-Saying what you would like to do.

Me gustaría jugar al fútbol los sábados.

-Giving advice.

Deberías estudiar más horas para aprobar el examen.

-Making suggestions.

Podrías ir en tren a trabajar.

-Saying what you would do.

Te dije que te ayudaría.

When you try to translate the conditional in Spanish bear in mind that the word would does not have any direct translation. We change the Spanish verb endings instead.

Here you have a paragraph containing many conditional verbs.

El próximo año me gustaría viajar mucho por el mundo. En particular me encantaría visitar Sudamérica. El problema es que los billetes de avión son muy caros así que  no podría ir al menos que me tocase la lotería. Si me tocase la lotería iría sin pensarlo dos veces. Además de viajar por el mundo también haría otras cosas como:

-          Compraría una casa en las montañas de Italia.

-          Pasearía por la playa todos los días al anochecer.

-          Jugaría a los dardos todas las noches en el bar.

-          Visitaría a mis amigos que viven en Estados Unidos.

-          Regalaría a mi novia un ramo de flores gigante.

Desafortunadamente aún no me tocó la lotería así que mañana tengo que ir a trabajar.
