Reflexive verbs. Part I

Estimado/a estudiante de español,

Gracias por seguir este blog. En este artículo vamos a ver los verbos reflexivos en español.

There are reflexive verbs in English in Spanish, although in Spanish are more common. But……what are the reflexive verbs anyway?

A reflexive verb is one where the subject and the object are the same and where the action of the verb “reflects back” on the subject. In other words: reflexive verbs are used to talk about actions  you do “yourself” and to “yourself”, for example:  ducharse ( to have a shower),secarse ( meaning to dry yourself), acostarse ( to go to bed)……

Also we have to take in account that the infinitive form of any reflexive verb has se attached to the end of it.  As we saw before : Ducharse.

The most common reflexive verbs at beginner and intermediate level are:

  • Acostarse    to go to bed
  • Afeitarse    to shave
  • Bañarse      to have a bath
  • Dormirse    to fall asleep
  • Ducharse    to have a shower
  • Enfadarse   to get angry
  • Lavarse       to wash
  • Levantarse  to get up
  • Llamarse     to be called
  • Secarse         to get dried
  • Sentarse       to sit down
  • Vestirse        to get dressed

Here you have some examples,

Mi hermano se ducha en el gimnasio
Normalmente me levanto a las 8 de la mañana
Se viste muy rápido por la mañana
Mi amigo se enfada cuando no gana al fútbol
Mi hijo normalmente se duerme después de comer
Me siento en el sofá cuando llego a casa
Se lava las manos antes de cocinar
Se acuestan muy tarde por la noche.

It is important to know that some verbs can be used as both “ reflexive” and “ordinary” verbs. The difference is that when the verb is used as an ordinary verb the action of the verb is not received by the subject of the sentence. For example,

Me lavo ………….I wash myself
Lavo la ropa ( I wash the clothes)

Me llamo Pepe                                       I am called Pepe
LLama a su padre por telefono             He rings his dad by phone

Me acuesto a las 10 de la noche                I  go to bed at 10 at night
Acuesto a mi hijo todas las noches           I put my son to sleep every night

How do we form the reflexive verbs?

In order to this we need to learn the “ reflexive pronouns”. You can see in the following example that between the subject ( yo, tú, él……) and the verbs is where the reflexive pronoun is located.

Example, reflexive form of the verb lavantarse ( to get up).

Yo me levanto
te levantas
Él /ella se levanta
Nosotros/as nos levantamos
Vosotros/as os levantais
Ellos/as se levantan

Remember that in Spanish you do not need to use the subject ( yo, tú….) so saying for instance ,me lavo, is perfectly correct.

These are the basics about reflexive verbs. Soon you will get some  activities  and  a new post about position of the reflexive pronouns and other uses of it.

El Condicional

Hola estimados estudiantes de español en Liverpool o de  cualquiera otra parte del mundo,

Hoy vamos a ver el tiempo condicional en español.

¿Qué es el condicional?

The conditional is a verb form used to talk about things that would happen or that would  be true under certain conditions. Here we have some examples in English:

I would go if I were free.

Also it is used to talk to say what you would like or need (in a polite form). For example.

I would like to study Spanish.

Could I have some assistance please?-

I would buy a plane if I had money.

As you see in English you can spot the conditional by the word would.
However in Spanish it is different. To form the conditional of any regular verb you just have to add the following endings to the infinitive of the verb:

-ía, -ías, -ía, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían.

And… the great new is that the endings are the same for all the conjugations (verbs ending in –ar ,-er,-ir).

Here you have some examples:

                        Hablar          Comer                            vivir

Yo                hablaría             comería                         viviría
Tú                 hablarías          comerías                        vivirías
Él/ella           hablaría            comería                          viviría
Nosotros/as  hablaríamos     comeríamos                  viviríamos
Vosotros/as  hablaríais          comeríais                       viviríais
Ellos/as        hablarían           comerían                       vivirían

Now let’s  see when we use the conditional in Spanish.

-Saying what you would like to do.

Me gustaría jugar al fútbol los sábados.

-Giving advice.

Deberías estudiar más horas para aprobar el examen.

-Making suggestions.

Podrías ir en tren a trabajar.

-Saying what you would do.

Te dije que te ayudaría.

When you try to translate the conditional in Spanish bear in mind that the word would does not have any direct translation. We change the Spanish verb endings instead.

Here you have a paragraph containing many conditional verbs.

Very soon you will get some activities about the conditional tense. If you ever feel like to sign up a course of Spanish in Liverpool there are many courses starting at www.yospanishschool.co.uk.

The near future in Spanish. (verb IR +a+ INFINITIVE)

Hola a todos!

To talk about the future in Spanish we can use either the "Simple future " (learn more here) or the near future .  En este post vamos a aprender como contruír el "near future" en Español.

The near future in Spanish is used to talk about plans in the future.  For example:

Mañana voy a jugar al fútbol con mis amigos.- Tomorrow I am going to play football with my friends.

En las próximas vacaciones vamos a visitar África en bicicleta- Next holidays we are going to visit Africa by bicycle.

Mis amigos van a comprar una casa en el pueblo.- My friends are going to buy a house in town.

Mi familia va a organizar una fiesta el sábado- Mi family is going to organise a party on Saturday.

As we can see in the previous examples we need the following to form the near future:

-Verb "IR" in the present tense  + A (to)+ verb in infinitive

Yo voy                                                                 jugar
Tú vas                                                                   estudiar
Él /Ella va                             +       a     +             viajar
Nosotros/as vamos                                               hablar
Vosotros/as vais                                                    escribir
Ellos/as van                                                          leer

Here you have a paragraph with many verbs in the near future tense.

Very soon you will get a post with many activities to practise the "near future",

The future tense. El futuro.

Hola a todos los estudiantes de español!

The today’s post is about the future tense in Spanish, in particular "El futuro simple".

Probably this is one of the easiest verbs to from in Spanish as you just have to add the endings for the future tense  to the infinitive and ……the  great new, despite many other tenses, is that the endings are the same for all the conjugations (verbs ending in AR , ER and IR).

So in terms of forming the future tense just add the following endings to the infinitive of the verb :-é, -ás, -á, -emos, éis, án.

Ejemplos.

First conjugation. Verbs ending in AR. Example: Hablar (To Speak)

Yo hablaré
Tú hablarás
Él/Ella hablará
Nosotros/as hablaremos
Vosotros/as hablaréis
Ellos/as hablarán

Second conjugation. Verbs ending in –ER. Example: Comer (To eat)

Yo comeré
Tú comerás
Él/Ella comerá
Nosotros/as comeremos
Vosotros/as comeréis
Ellos/as comerán

Third conjugation. Verbs ending in –IR. Example : Vivir: (To live)

Yo viviré
Tú vivirás
Él/ella vivirá
Nosotros/as viviremos
Vosotros/as vivirán
Ellos/as vivirán

As you see all the conjugations have the same endings and  the infinitive form  is embedded in it so definitely this is not most difficult tense in Spanish!

Here you have some sentences in Spanish:

Mañana iré a trabajar a Mallorca.

En el futuro estudiaré en la universidad de Londres.

Mi hermano comerá con nosotros el Domingo.

Mis amigos jugarán al fútbol el sábado por la mañana.

Tus compañeros de trabajo completarán el informe la semana próxima.

However  some verbs do not use  the infinitive as the stem of the verb, but this is something we are going to see in another post about  irregular future verbs.

Disfruta hablando de tus planes futuros y utiliza este timpo verbal para hablar de acontecimientos o acciones que serán realizadas en futuro.  En los  siguientesposts pondré en el blog algunos ejercicios sobre el futuro en los que podrás practicar como formar el futuro en español.

Interrogative pronouns and interrogative adjectives. Ask questions in Spanish!

Hola a todos los estudiantes de español que siguen el blog regularmente!

Probably when you start speaking in  a foreign language, one of the most useful things is to know how to ask about prices, places, people......

So on this post we are going to go through the interrogation pronouns and interrogation adjectives.

What are the interrogation pronouns? Basically they are the words used without a noun to ask questions like: Who, What, whose, which, whom.....

In Spanish the interrogative pronouns are:

Singular                                   Plural
¿Qué?                                     ¿Qué?                         What
¿Cuál?                                    ¿Cuáles?                      Which/ what
¿Quién?                                  ¿Quiénes?                   Who
¿Cuánto?/Cuánta                   ¿Cuántos?/¿Cuántas?  How much/ how many

Here you have some examples:

¿Qué estas cocinando?
¿Qué escuchas en la radio?
¿Qué son estas cosas?

¿Cuál es tu libro favorito?
¿Cuál es tu deporte favorito?

¿Quién fue el campeón del mundo de ciclismo?
¿Quién es tu hermano?

¿Cuánto es?
¿Cuántos  tienes?

So basically these are the interrogative pronouns in Spanish.

Related to this we have the "interrogative adjectives" which are basically the  interrogative words, Qué, cuánto/cuánta, cuántos, cuántas  used with nouns.

Examples:

¿Qué café te gusta más?
¿Cuántos familiares están en la comida?
¿Cuánto dinero tienes en el bolsillo?

As you see in this questions  the interrogative pronouns are followed by a noun, that is why we called them interrogative adjectives.

Very soon  I will post an activity related to this topic in order to help you practise the interrogative pronouns and adjectives.

Activities simple past.

Hola estudiante de español,

En este post vamos a practicar el pretérito (simple past in English)

1) Actividad. Rewrite the sentences in the simple past tense.

Ejemplo:

1. Termino mis clases a las 2 de la tarde./ Terminé mis clases a las 2 de la tarde.

2. Miguel sale con sus amigos al centro/

4. Pedro habla con su madre de las vacaciones/

5. Mis amigos estudian en una universidad muy lejos del centro de la ciudad/

6. Yo no escribo nada en clase de español/

7. Ellos llegan al aeropuerto por la noche/

2)Actividad. Write these sentences in the plural form.

Ejemplo
1)Ayer comí en la casa de la abuela/ Ayer (nosotros) comimos en la casa de la abuela.

2). Pablo salió con su coche por la mañana / Pablo y sus amigos ....................con su coche por la mañana.

3. Mi primo estudió en la universidad a distancia/ Mis primos......................

4. Tú cenaste en la pizzería / Vosotros....................

5. Mi amigo rompió el vaso en la cena/Mis amigos......................

6. El estudiante paró el taxi en la calle/ Los estudiantes..........................

7. ¿Bailaste mucho en la discoteca?/ Vosotros ..................................................

El pretérito - simple past. Regular verbs.

Hola estudiantes de español,

Hoy vamos a explicar cuando usamos el pretérito perfecto (simple past in English).

Before anything else we should know that in Spanish we have different tenses to refer to the past. The most common tense is the preterite (el pretérito perfecto), the one we are going to see on this post.
However, we have to bear in mind that  we use another tense,  the so called "imperfect tense", for descriptions and actions that happened frequently in the past.

So refocusing on the pretérito perfecto.....Basically we use the simple past for actions:

-completed at a certain point in the past. For example: La semana pasada visité a mis padres.

-that were part of a series of events : Me duché, Hice la cama y tomé un café antes de ir la escuela.

-that lasted for a period of time in the past. For example: El exámen duró 3 horas.

Now we are going to learn how to from the preterite of regular verbs.

Verbs ending in -AR. For example: Hablar.

Yo hablé
Tú hablaste
Él/ella habló
Nosotros/as hablamos
Vosotros/as hablasteis
Ellos/ellas hablaron

The letters in bold are the endings for all the regular verbs ending in -AR.  (-e,-aste,-ó, 'amos,-asteis, -aron). Therefore to form the simple past of any regular verb of the 1st conjugation (-AR) in Spanish you just have to add these ending to the stem of the verb.

Verbs ending in -ER. For example: Comer

Yo comí
Tú comiste
Él/Ella comió
Nosotros/as comimos
Vosotros/as comisteis
Ellos/as comieron

Verbs ending in -IR.For example: Vivir

Yo viví
Tú viviste
Él/ella viv
Nosotros/as vivimos
Vosotros/as vivisteis
Ellos/as vivieron

As you can see the endings for the 2nd and 3rd conjugation (-ER , IR) are exactly the same, so you just have to add these endings ( - í, -iste, -ió,-imos, -isteis, -ieron) to the stem of any regular verb.

Having learnt this the good part is that now you can form the past tense of many regular verbs in Spanish.!! Muy bien!
Unfortunately in Spanish there is always a "pero"......In these case the drawback is the many irregular verbs  ....which is something we are going to go through on the forthcoming posts!

Espero que este post te ayude con tu español!. En el caso de que quieras saber más o inscribirte en un curso de español puedes enviarme un correo o consultar mi página web para más información.

El presente simple en español. The present simple in Spanish. (Regular verbs)

Estimados estudiantes de español,

En este post vamos a explicar el tiempo presente en español. En particular el presente simple en verbos regulares..
We use the "present simple" to talk about:

-Things that are generally true. Por ejemplo: En España hace mucho calor en verano.

-Things that happen at intervals. Por jemplo: A veces visito a mis amigos en Madrid.

-Things that are true at the moment. Por ejemplo: Yo no trabajo los domingos.

Now let´s see how we form the present simple for the regular verbs.
In order to form the present simple in Spanish we have to take in account that in Spanish all the verbs in the infinitive forms end in -AR - ER or -IR. Those verbs ending in -AR  belong to the first conjugation, the verbs ending in -ER to the second conjugation and the verbs ending in -IR to the third conjugation.

1)The first conjugation -AR. Por ejemplo: estudiar, hablar, bailar, caminar.

Let´s take for example the present simple of the verb hablar.

Yo hablo
Tú hablas
Él/ella habla
Nosotros/as hablamos
Vosotros/as habláis
Ellos/as hablan

The letters in bold are the 1st conjugation endings for the present tense in Spanish. So basically in order to form the present tense you just have to follow the next two steps:
1- Get rid of the AR ending in the infinitive form: Por ejemplo: HABL-AR
2-Add the ending of the present simple to the "stem" of the verb. Por ejemplo: Yo habl-o, Tú habl-as, Él habla, nosotros hablamos........

2)Now let´s  see the second conjugation. Verbs ending in -ER. Por ejemplo: Comer, beber,

Yo bebo
Tú bebes
Él/Ella bebe
Nosotros/as bebemos
Vosotros/as bebéis
Ellos/as beben

The letters in bold are the 2nd conjugation endings for the present tense in Spanish. So basically in order to form the present tense you just have to follow the next two steps:
1- Get rid of the ER ending in the infinitive form: Por ejemplo: BEB-ER
2-Add the ending of the present simple to the "stem" of the verb. Por ejemplo: Yo beb-o, tú beb-es. él viv-e.....

3)Finally let´s see the 3rd conjugation.Verbs ending in -IR. Por ejemplo:  Vivir, Partir (to leave).

Yo vivo
Tú vives
Él/Ella vive
Nosotros/as vivimos
Vosotros/as vivís
Ellos/as viven

The letters in bold are the 3rd conjugation endings for the present tense in Spanish. So basically in order to form the present tense you just have to follow the next two steps:
1- Get rid of the IR ending in the infinitive form: Por ejemplo: VIV-IR
2-Add the ending of the present simple to the "stem" of the verb. Por ejemplo: Yo viv-o, tú viv-es, él/ella viv-e......

As a summary it is important to remember that the endings are different ( but similar) in each of the 3 different conjugations and  in order to from the present regular tense we just have to add the endings to the stem of the regular verbs.

Ser o estar ?

Hola a todos!

Today we are going to explain clearly and briefly the verb To Be in Spanish. Probably this is one of the most important (and confusing ) things to learn when your start learning Spanish.

First of all it is essential to know  that in Spanish we have 2 different verbs to be, SER and ESTAR and we use each one of them depending on the circumstance or meaning involved.

Once we have clear the fact that both SER and ESTAR are translated in English as the verb TO BE, I will show you when to use them.

Basically the verb SER is used in the following cases:

1)With nouns and prepositions:

Profesión:  Soy recepcionista - I am a receptionist
Nacionalidad : Juan es inglés - Juan is English
Origen: Tú eres de Mallorca - You are from Mallorca
Material; El reloj es de oro - The watch is(made) of gold.

2)With Adjectives ( for permanent, essential qualities)

La casa es vieja    The house is old
El hotel es moderno- The hotel is modern
Miguel es simpático -Miguel is nice
María es baja - María is short
Barcelona es grande - Barcelona is big

As you see we basically use the verb SER for permanent or long term situations.

Now let´s see when we use the verb ESTAR in Spanish

1)With prepositions (Indicating location or situation)

Barcelona está en el Este de España-  Barcelona is in the east of Spain
Mi amigo no está en casa- Mi friend is not at home
El colegio está en las montañas- The school is in the mountains
Dónde está Vigo? Where is Vigo?

2)With adjectives ( indicating transitory, temporary or accidental states, things that can change or are the result of change, state of health or mood)

La habitación está sucia - The room is dirty
Él está enfermo - He is ill
Miguel está triste- Miguel is sad

In general terms we can say, with some exceptions, that the verb SER is used for permanent or long term states and the verb ESTAR for location and temporary states.

I hope this helps or at least It does not confuse you more:).

Here I leave you a bit of Spanish to enjoy!
